Toms River Police Report:

Toms River Police responded to a resident calling in a suspicious vehicle in the Bayshore area just before 1130 p.m.  Officer Andrew Chencharik  attempted to pull over a 1998 Dodge Ram pickup but the driver refused to pull over.  Officer Chencharik followed the vehicle through Gilford Park section then onto Route 37 eastbound.  The pickup then traveled onto route 35 north into the Ortley beach section making a left on third avenue then to Bay Blvd then back to 37 westbound.  The pickup then went to Hooper avenue then east on Cedar Grove Road  then through various neighborhoods off Vaughn Avenue.  The driver 20 minutes later drove onto a residence front lawn stopping just short of the residence and exited the vehicle at the north end of Vaughn  Avenue.  The suspect then ran through a vinyl fence into the backyard where he was apprehended by Officer Vincent Pedalino and Eric Harris hiding in a bush.

Arrested was Matthew J Thoms 43 of Toms River who has been  charged with eluding, resisting arrest, Possession of CDS, criminal mischief and numerous motor vehicle offense.  Mr. Thoms has been placed in Ocean County Jail on $50,000 bail no 10 %.

The low speed pursuit was a textbook example of following pursuit policy, and is a credit to the officers, dispatchers and Sergeants Patrick Dellane and Raymond Maloney who supervised the successful apprehension.
