Car overturns on Route 9 in Toms River 11/20

Toms River Police Report:

Toms River Police are investigating a one car crash that occurred just after 7  p.m. Sunday night on Route #9 just south of Church Road.  Ramon Rego was driving a 2008 Nissan southbound on Route #9 when his vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a pole on the east side of the road then overturned.  A northbound driver reported she was forced to take evasive action right before the crash by traveling in the southbound lanes and just barely missed colliding with the Nissan.

Police received a call minutes before the accident from a concerned citizen that the vehicle was driving recklessly southbound on route #9 crossing over into the oncoming  lanes.

Mr. Rego was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River.

The utility pole snapped off and that caused a temporary loss of power in the area as well as necessitating of closing route #9 between in both directions Church Road and Sunset Avenue.   Utility crews are on scene but expect traffic will be detoured for many hours.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation emergency response team is on scene assisting with traffic control.  Traffic safety Officer Robert Westfall and Sergeant Ralph Stocco are investigating.
