Toms River Residents Invited to Become “Auction Hunters”

By Phil Stilton

Local fans of the Spike TV series, Auction Hunters, will have the chance to be just like their widescreen reality heroes, Allen and Ton on February on the 9th and the 15th when several Toms River storage facilities will have units on the auction block.

On February 9th, Uncle Bob’s Storage will hold an auction at each of their  Route 37 locations.  Combined, the two locations will put a whopping 16 units up for sale, starting at 2pm.   The units include household goods, furniture, electronics and tools.

The action starts February 15th at 11:30 am at Storage Station on James St.  Two units will be on the block containing boxes and totes.  At 12:30 pm, you can head over to  Storage Station’s auction on Flint Road for two more box and tote units.

At 1:00 pm, United Storage on Route 37 will have an auction for 5 units containing household items.

Ronald Weaver, manager of Storage Station says that ever since the show started, he’s seen a big increase in locals coming out hoping to find the big score. “We’ve had up to 60 people come out in recent months for these auctions. It’s tripled.” Weaver said “Before the show, we would get just a handful.”

In the show, Allen Haff and Clinton “Ton” Jones travel across America, bidding on unclaimed storage units, hoping to find forgotten treasures, which they then sell for huge profits sometimes.

As for local treasure hunters, Weaver said it’s hit and miss and you never know what you’re going to find inside the units.  ”In the past, if we opened up a unit and it had a couple black plastic bags or a box or two, I couldn’t pay anyone to take it.” he said “A while back, we had one just like that and a guy paid 10 bucks.  He found a box full of 14 karat gold jewelry.”

There will also be an auction at the New Jersey Self-Storage in Jackson Township on Wednesday at 4:30 pm.

To confirm auctions, please contact the location beforehand.  All auctions are tentative based on non-payment of owners by prescribed dates.
