Toms River Police Chief Reminds Residents to Lock Car Doors at Night… again
For the past six months, the theme of public service announcements from Toms River Police Chief Mastronardy and the Toms River Police Department has been consistent. “Lock your car doors at night because there are people breaking into unlocked cars and stealing from them.”
In a bulletin released Friday, Toms River Police are once again reminding residents to lock secure their valuables and lock your vehicles. On Friday morning, over 20 unlocked vehicles were entered in the Township.
“Unlocked vehicles were entered on Bartlett Place, Alden, Wedgewood ,Round tree, Breezy Oaks, Cornell, Cedar Grove streets.” Mastronardy said.
Police first received a call at 130 a.m. Friday that a Cornell Drive resident chased a male suspect with a flashlight looking in a neighbors car. Then at 230 a.m. a resident on Tradewinds observed two white males checking out cars parked in driveways. The witness scared the males off who are described as about 17 years, 5’11” both dressed in dark clothes with one wearing a white backpack.. The suspects took small change about $100 total, a few gift cards, but left behind GPS in the cars they entered.
“People need to start locking their car doors at night.” Mastronardy said in a phone call on Friday “It’s that simple.” The chief said thieves are targeting unlocked vehicles and have not been damaging vehicles to gain entry.
