Toms River Home Fire Reported after Woman Falls Asleep Smoking Cigarette According to Police
Toms River Police and East Dover Fire Company responded to a reported structural fire just after 4 a.m. on Hazelwood Drive.
The first officers arrived on the scene within minutes were Sergeant Ray Maloney and Officer Nat Williams who found that all residents had evacuated the home. There was a heavy smoke condition and visible flames.
Danielle Luster, a resident of the home, reported she was in her bedroom went she smelled smoke and alerted her mother and assisted her out of the home. Her mother, Debra Luster, was apparently smoking on a couch when she fell asleep and was transported to Brick Hospital for treatment for burns of her arms and hands.
The East Dover Fire Company extinguished the fire and one of their members was injured fighting the fire and taken to Community Medical Center for treatment.
The Toms River Bureau of Fire prevention is investigating the fire along with officers Dan Herr and Thomas Dimichele
