Update on Fatal Shooting in Beachwood
At approximately 10:49 PM Beachwood Police responded to a reported shooting at the High Velocity Sports Bar & Grill, located at 226 Atlantic City Boulevard. Ocean County Prosecutor Michael Paulhus said his office would be commenting on this incident in the morning.
Unconfirmed Account of Incident
Unconfirmed sources say a shooting took place and one person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Potentially involved in the shooting incident is 52 year old Mark Tanouye, of Beachwood, according to another unconfirmed source who said Tanouye was seen carrying a gun before he was shot.
Criminal Past
Tanouye was released from prison on March 13th after serving time for charges of weapons possession, terroristic threats, threatening to kill and impersonating a public servant.
In 2006, Tanouye was indicted by an Ocean County grand jury for posing as an undercover police officer and harassing patrons at the Sawmill Restaurant and Tavern in Seaside Park. Tanouye reportedly walked into the bar and identified himself as an undercover officer. He then questioned patrons before borough police arrived. Tanouye attempted to flee from the scene, but was stopped by police. Court records indicate he continued to claim he was “Sgt. Englewood” of the Beachwood Police Department. After confirming with the Beachwood Police Department that he was not, officers arrested him for impersonating a police officer.
Also in 2006, he had been indicted for kidnapping his ex-girlfriend, Thea Fuhrmann, of Beachwood, and making terroristic threats. Police claimed Tanouye pulled out an imitation gun and pointed it at Furhmann. He had kept Furhmann captive in her home for nearly four hours, according to court documents.
Prior to that, he had pleaded guilty to impersonating a police officer in then Dover Township after entering the Quality Inn and claiming to be a member of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office working on a drug investigation. He was arrested by township police after harassing patrons.
In 2008, he was sentenced to 7 years in prison after having a criminal record dating back to 1975 that included more than 25 convictions.
A representative of High Velocity Sports Bar & Grill who answered the phone tonight said he was not able to speak about the incident until authorities have finished their investigation.
