Toms River Animal Shelter Construction Update

Toms River–Work  is progressing at the new home of the Toms River Animal Shelter since the groundbreaking ceremony back in April.

The current location of the Animal Shelter is on Whitesville Road, by Route 70, towards Lakewood.  Toms River Township Mayor Thomas F. Kelaher said, “The shelter is way out on the outskirts of town and is very small and antiquated.  They were euthanizing animals at a higher rate than the ASPCA permits.  There are simply not enough adoptions, which is yet another reason to move the facility to a more centralized location.”

According to the Toms River Township Engineer, Robert J. Chankalian, the new shelter is 7,900 square feet, which is about three times the size of the old shelter.

Construction is expected to be complete by December 2013.
