Seaside Police Close Off Beach Access After Rescues

Seaside Heights–The ocean waters were rough with large waves and rip currents today from Seaside Heights to Island Beach.  At Island Beach, lifeguards on duty during the Island Beach Plum Festival kept swimmers from going beyond knee deep as huge waves pounded the beach close to the shoreline.

Further north, in Seaside Heights, where no lifeguards were on duty,  two swimmers were rescued by the Seaside Heights Fire Department Water Rescue Team.   The rescue transpired during the annual Seafood Festival, where the department was manning the beer garden.  Several members of the department broke away from the festivities and made their way across the parking lot to control traffic in front of the firehouse and to forcibly remove cars from parking metered spots around the firehouse, declaring an emergency situation, threatening to ticket visitors in metered spots in the vicinity of the firehouse.
