United Water Announces Fall Hydrant Flushing Program
United Water will begin its Fall flushing program throughout the service territory beginning Monday, September 17, 2012 in the Township of Toms River, the Borough of South Toms River and the Holiday City section of the Township of Berkeley. The flushing program is expected to last six weeks, concluding on or about Friday, October 26, 2012.
United Water flushing crews will work during the day, Monday through Thursday, between the hours of 8 AM and 4 PM as well as during the night from 8 PM to 6 AM.
On Friday’s during the flushing program, crews will work from 8 AM to 12 Noon. There will be no flushing schedule for weekends.
“Flushing removes harmless minerals that collect in the water mains,” said Rick Pfleiderer, director of operations. “The program is part of the company’s routine maintenance to assure high water quality. Flushing hydrants helps to maintain the integrity of the distribution system by keeping the water lines clean, and it is necessary for fire protection because it ensures that the hydrants are working properly.”
Pfleiderer explained that during the flushing process, customers may experience low water pressure or discolored water. While the water is safe to drink, he said customers may prefer to wait until it runs clear before drinking or washing clothes or dishes.
