Good News for New Jersey Craft Beer Breweries

Trenton–Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R- Union), sponsor of legislation helping expand sales and distribution opportunities for brewers of craft beers in New Jersey, today applauded Governor Christie’s signature of the measure.
The law, formerly S-641 (Kean/Norcross), brings regulations applied to craft breweries and “brewpubs” more in line with those in neighboring states.

“Fruits and vegetables aren’t the only ‘Jersey Fresh’ product in high demand,” said Kean. “The old restrictions on sales and distribution on locally produced beers were the definition of red tape and a burden on these small businesses. Our bi-partisan effort has rewritten the law to help New Jersey brewers more easily compete.”

Specifically, the new law ups the amount of product that can be produced by a restricted license brewery (brewpub) from 3, 000 to 10, 000 barrels per year, and gives them access to the state’s wholesale distribution system. Limited license breweries (microbreweries) may now sell product for on-premises consumption at a licensed facility, and may sell limited amounts of beer for take-out at that facility as well.
