Jackson Third Grader’s Art Published on Cover of Pediatrics in Review Magazine
Jackson–Maura Cummings, a third grade student from Saint Aloysius School, had her artwork published on the front cover of Pediatrics in Review, the official journal of The American Academy of Pediatrics. The journal offers a cover art contest each year for artists, 5 to 16 years of age. Twelve students are selected and a new work of art is featured monthly. The American Academy of Pediatrics is pro children and takes pride in showcasing the developmental accomplishments for each of the different age groups. The children are encouraged to express themselves through art. Maura entered the contest in 2011 at the age of 6 and was selected as a winner. When asked what inspired Maura to create her drawing, Maura said, “I wanted to draw an outside scene so I drew a picture of blue skies and a castle. I was happy when I won because it was nice to see my art on the cover.” Maura’s winning art can be seen on the front cover of the October 2012 issue. Toni McEwan, Saint Aloysius School art teacher encourages all the students to find their inner artist and has enabled her students to create many great works of art including Rhythmic Lines, Abstract Foil Reliefs and Zentangles.
