Letter: Resident Fact Checks Candidates, Finds Error with Coca-Cola Claim
Letter to the Editor:
Candidates Barrington and Cattonar have been telling us for weeks that “The Jackson School District didn’t hesitate to sign a lucrative deal with Coke recently, yet our Administration seems to show no interest in doing the same.” I posed this question to the Jackson Board of Education and received the following reply “It is an agreement that provides us with $2,000 {annually] if we agree to offer Coca-Cola’s water and sports drink exclusively. We offer various water and sports drinks now anyway, but this arrangement says we will offer their Dasani water and Powerade products exclusively. We do not offer soda products in the Jackson School District. The contract hasn’t been finalized yet so I can’t provide it to you, but I can confirm that this is the information that it will include. “
$2,000 helps pay for a couple of pencils and pens. Whether it can be defined as lucrative is another question. Given the size of the budget for the Board of Education and Municipality, I think we need to recalibrate our opinions on lucrative. It might also be appropriate to only issue statements to the public that are accurate and can be supported by factual statements. Lucrative school district contracts with Coke are simply figments of political rhetoric.
