Jackson–It was a Wild West shootout today at the Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol Range in Jackson Township as more than 100 gun slinging cowboys from the tri-state area came together for the annual “Purgatory in the Pines”. The event was hosted by the local Jackson Hole Gang and billed as a Cowboy Action Shooting tournament. The Jackson Hole Gang is part of the Single Action Shooting Society that started 25 years ago on the west coast. Shooters use era specific shotguns, rifles and pistols and shoot targets at short range in different mid 19th century stages.
Shooters today went through 10 different ranges, each with their own obstacles and challenges. The events are all judged based on time and accuracy.
The event continues on Sunday as a team event consisting of one man and one woman will go head to head based on Saturday’s results. It is open to the public.
