Barnegat Lighthouse Weathers Hurricane Sandy; Park Reopens Today

Long Beach Island–It has stood watch over the Jersey Shore, guiding sailors to safety since 1835 and has been the icon of Ocean County for generations.   The Barnegat Lighthouse has survived yet another ferocious storm and continues to shine over the Barnegat Bay.

A spokesperson for the New Jersey Parks and Forestry said, “Most of the damage at Barnegat Ligthouse was contained to the picnic area with major erosion near the bulkhead. As soon as the public is permitted onto Long Beach Island we will be able to reopen but the picnic area will remain closed.”

Since the storm hit, the lighthouse and park have remained closed, but the park opens today.

The lighthouse and the picnic area are closed but the jetty walkway, beach, shade shelters and nature trail are accessible.   “We hope to be able to reopen the lighthouse very soon!” the spokesperson said.
