No News on When Island Residents can begin to Repair Damaged Homes

Toms River–Ortley Beach and other Toms River barrier island community homeowners will have to keep waiting if they want to begin to repair their homes before the winter months roll in at the Jersey Shore behind Hurricane Sandy.

Louis Knox, a lifelong resident of Normandy Shores wants to know when he and his neighbors could begin allowing contractors to rebuild their homes.    ”My concern for them members of our community is we’d like to get back and start working on our houses to preserve what we already have, that’s our only objective,” he pleaded to the township council Tuesday night.  ”We want to get 8 hours a day or whatever we can get to secure things before the winter season comes in.”

The council deferred the question to Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy who explained there are no plans at this time to allow repairs on homes.  ”It’s premature to say contractors, we’re not doing any work with repairs right now,” he said.  ”…remember we have different towns we have to control.  We have checkpoints to make sure you’re not walking off with your neighbor’s copper tubing.  We’re going to have a controlled re-entry.”
