Trial of Hamilton Mayor in School Insurance Corruption Scandal Enters Day Two

Trenton–The trial of  John Bencivengo, 58, mayor of Hamilton Township, N.J. goes on today in federal court in Trenton.   Bencivengo was indicted in connection with $12,400 in bribes he allegedly solicited and accepted in exchange for his official influence to assist a cooperating witness in maintaining the position of health insurance broker with the township’s school district  before Judge Thompson.

A Hamilton Township employee close to Bencivengo has previously admitted to money laundering in connection with this case already.   Yesterday, Roberty Warney testified against Bencivengo.

Warney was the former director of community planning and a former school board member who in court said that Bencivengo was his best friend and best man at his wedding.  ”I would do anything for him,” he said.  ”…I totally regret that and it was actually illegal.”

In court this afternoon, the Mayor’s influence over the Hamilton Board of Education was questioned as the mayor has no official position with the board of education.

Bencivengo, a Republican, is currently serving as Mayor of Hamilton Township.
